Corn Husk Dewatering Screw Press
Corn husk dewatering is a vital process in both animal feed production and the starch industry, transforming agro-waste into valuable by-products. At the core of this transformation is the Dewatering Screw Press, designed to efficiently handle fibrous biomass like corn husk while significantly reducing moisture content.
Role in Starch Plants
In corn wet milling and starch extraction facilities, large volumes of corn husk are generated as a by-product. These husks, after separation from the primary starch stream, retain high moisture content and require efficient handling before further processing. Many starch plants integrate a pre-treatment step where the husks are steeped in caustic or enzymatic solutions to soften the lignocellulosic matrix, making the material more manageable.
Following steeping, the husks pass through mechanical screening systems—typically side hill (parabolic) screens or rotary drum screens—which help eliminate excess water and large solids. The screened material, with around 90% moisture content, is then conveyed to the Dewatering Screw Press.
Mechanical Dewatering Process
Inside the press, the corn husks are compacted under progressive pressure, effectively reducing moisture to around 55–58%. This mechanical step drastically cuts down the energy required for thermal drying, which is often the next stage in starch plants or feed processing lines. The partially dried husk is then processed into pellets or flakes, which are either used in animal nutrition or sold as biofuel-grade biomass.
