Cow Dung Dewatering Screw Press

Cow Dung Slurry Dewatering for Dairy Farm Applications

Cow dung has been a cornerstone of rural Indian life for centuries, valued both for its agricultural benefits and as a renewable energy source. With the modernization of dairy farms, cow dung is typically washed off with water, resulting in a pumpable slurry that contains around 20% solids. While this format is convenient for handling, the high moisture content poses challenges for storage, transport, and further utilization.

Nature of the Material

The cow dung slurry comprises a mixture of cow dung, urine, wash water, and residual fodder. It is collected from cow sheds or dairy parlors through floor washing or flush systems. With a solids content of approximately 20%, it is in a free-flowing slurry form, but still too wet for most direct applications like composting or fuel use. Additionally, the slurry's high water content adds significantly to disposal and processing costs.

Processing with the Screw Press

To make this material usable, our Dewatering Screw Press provides a continuous and robust solution that separates the solid and liquid fractions effectively.

Typical Process Flow:

  1. Collection & Feeding:
The slurry is pumped from the collection pit or tank and fed into the press directly. No prior thickening is needed due to the already high 20% solids content.
  2. Dewatering Action:
The material is conveyed via a rotating helical screw inside a perforated housing, where pressure gradually builds and moisture is removed. The press handles the fibrous, semi-digested cow dung smoothly, even when mixed with small amounts of fodder or bedding.
  3. Output Consistency:
The solid discharge reaches 65-70% moisture, or 30-35% solids. The liquid output is collected separately and can be filtered further, reused, or safely disposed of.

Downstream Applications

  • Cow Dung Sticks and Logs:
The semi-dry dung is often molded into sticks or cakes, widely used in low-cost heating solutions, traditional Indian festive rituals, or as fuel in non-standard rural boilers.
  • Composting and Vermicomposting:
With improved texture and reduced water content, the dewatered dung is more suitable for composting - breaking down faster and with less odor.
  • Biogas Feedstock:
The higher solids content improves digestion efficiency in anaerobic biogas plants, increasing methane yield and reducing retention time.
  • Liquid Utilization:
The liquid fraction can be further filtered and used for farm irrigation or sprayed on fields as a bio-nutrient solution, making full use of the material's nutrient profile.

Key Advantages

  • Efficient processing of high-solid-content slurry (20% solids)
  • Reduced waste volume and haulage costs
  • Continuous operation for high throughput
  • Robust design for fibrous material
  • Supports multiple reuse paths for both solid and liquid output

Our Dewatering Screw Press enables dairy farms and rural processing centers to turn cow dung slurry into valuable end products. Whether for fuel, compost, biogas, or liquid fertilizer, this solution aligns with sustainable practices and traditional utility, delivering both ecological and economic returns.
